Discussion “Legal argumentation as a human practice: can AI-based systems create meaning for human beings?”

Date and time:25 September 2025,

2:00 p.m. — 3:00 p.m.

Place:Remote (on YouTube)
Language:English

Could legal argumentation remain meaningful for human beings if it is increasingly assisted by AI-based systems? Does the judicial duty to provide reasons for decisions necessarily mean that the decision should be adopted by a limited human being? Would it be legitimate to sacrifice our shared cultural practice of creating meaning in legal contexts in exchange for more precise, potentially less biased, AI-based systems grounded decisions?

This open lecture will address the challenges and opportunities posed by different methods of AI in adjudication. The discussion will feature Dr. Lyuben Todev (Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski) and Dr. Donatas Murauskas (Vilnius University Law Faculty).

This discussion is part of the course Global Law and Legal Ethics at Vilnius University Law Faculty.

We invite you to join our online meeting.

The event will be held in English.
