Settling in Vilnius

Every September, more than 60,000 of them from all over Lithuania and foreign countries gather here to enjoy their studies at more than 10 higher education institutions. Vilnius – the heart of Lithuania – invites you to join in!

Cosy Atmosphere. In the tiny medieval streets of the old Vilnius, you’ll smell Lithuania’s great history. UNESCO-inscribed old town of Vilnius is well-known among world travellers and locals as a place with unique atmosphere. Charming bars, stylish restaurants, trendy nightclubs – all of them can’t wait to see you.

Green. Vilnius is one of the greenest capitals in Europe with a lot of hills, parks, magic forests, and cycling routes! Also, Vilnius loves walkers as it is small in size but big in natural beauty.

Part of Europe. The beautiful Baltic Sea and the rest of Europe are within arm’s reach! The Baltic pearls – Riga and Tallinn – are a road trip away. And a number of European cities are connected with Vilnius by low-cost airlines.

Visa

Since Lithuania is the EU Member State, it is included in the Schengen area.

Once you have decided to study at Vilnius University, you’ll have to check the list of foreign countries whose citizens can travel visa-free to the Republic of Lithuania. More information.

Moving around

Vilnius is a compact city with a well organised public transport system, including the night buses on weekends. Here, you can get around without great effort and safely. Because of the size of the city, once you are on a bus or trolleybus, you are most likely to reach your destination in max. 30 min. For moving around in the centre of Vilnius, you can also rent a public bicycle!

Daily trolleybuses and buses start running at 5 a.m. and stop at midnight. For the timetables and routes visit here. Information is available in 15 languages. Use a trip planner to check departure and arrival time. For the use of public transport we recommend to purchase an e-ticket (“Vilniečio kortelė”).

However, if you are on your own, or lost, or just too tired to wait for a bus, a taxi or Uber can be an easy, quick and safe alternative to reach your destination. The usual fare is from 0.50 to 1 EUR per kilometre in the city.
