Scientific Conference “25 Years of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania. Strengthening the Interaction between European and National Human Rights Protection”

On October 17th, the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania is hosting an international scientific conference entitled “25 Years of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania. Strengthening the Interaction between European and National Human Rights Protection,” dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania.

“The establishment of administrative courts in Lithuania in 1999, followed shortly thereafter by the establishment of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania, were precisely steps that needed to be taken in order to move closer to the European dream. Lithuania could only become a member of the European Union, which is based on freedom, democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights and freedoms, and other values, when these values became our own. And, looking back from today’s perspective, we can safely say that the administrative court system has contributed significantly to this happening,” said Prof. Dr Haroldas Šinkūnas, Dean of the VU Law Faculty, in his welcoming speech to the conference participants.

At the beginning of the event, welcoming speeches were also given by Gitanas Nausėda, President of the Republic of Lithuania, Julius Sabatauskas, Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs, Chair of the Judicial Council and Chair of the Supreme Court of Lithuania Assoc. Prof. Dr Danguolė Bublienė, Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė, and Chair of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania Prof. Dr. Skirgailė Žalimienė.

The event was organized by the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania and the VU Law Faculty, in cooperation with the National Courts Administration and the Office of the President of the Republic of Lithuania.
