On the occasion of the twenty years’ anniversary of Lithuania’s membership in the European Union, an International Scientific Conference “The Republic of Lithuania in the European Union: Twenty Years of Experience, Challenges and Growth” is being organized by the Law Faculty of Vilnius University. An exceptional scientific event will be honoured by a guest speaker President of the Court of Justice of the European Union Prof. Dr. Koen Lenaerts and attended by most famous foreign and Lithuanian scholars and judges of international (European) courts.
In 2024, the 1st of May marks the 20th anniversary of the 2004 enlargement, which expanded the European Union by ten countries, including the Republic of Lithuania. This enlargement was and remains an unprecedented event by its scale and long-lasting effects on peace, stability, and prosperity in Europe.
The first session of the Conference will address the topics of the constitutional meaning of the European Union membership, the organisation’s enlargement and its impact on democracy and the values of the Union. The conference speakers of the second session will take a closer look into different areas of European integration, including justice and human rights. The third session will attempt to consider possible further expansion of the European Union in terms of enlargement and competence.
Presentations at the conference will be delivered by outstanding foreign scholars, namely, Prof. Dr. Armin von Bogdandy, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Prof. Dr. Luis Poiares Pessoa Maduro, professor of the European University Institute, School of Transnational Governance, Prof. Dr. (HP) Bartosz Wojciechowski, researcher at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Lodz, and Judge of the Supreme Administrative Court of Poland, Prof. Dr. Stefan Kadelbach, Dean of the Law Faculty of University Frankfurt and Dr. Volodymyr Venher, Dean of the Faculty of Law of National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”. Conference speakers also include judges of international (European) courts, Prof. Dr. Ineta Ziemele and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irmantas Jarukaitis, Judges of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Prof. Dr. (HP) Egidijus Kūris, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights. Presidents of Lithuanian courts: President of the Supreme Administrative Court of the Republic of Lithuania, Prof. Dr. Skirgailė Žalimienė and President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Lithuania, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Danguolė Bublienė; as well as Prof. Dr. Tomas Davulis, Justice of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania and teacher of the Law Faculty of Vilnius University and Mr Marius Vaščega, Head of European Commission’s Representation in Lithuania.
