Dr Inga Martinkutė’s new book, Reconciling Domestic Property Regimes and International Investment Protection: Origins, Comparisons and Contestations, was launched at Vilnius University Faculty of Law on 11 September 2026. Published by Brill | Nijhoff, the book examines how international investment protection interacts with different domestic concepts of property.
The launch event brought together Professor Giedrė Jokubauskaitė of the University of Glasgow, VU Faculty of Law Practice Professor Laurynas Didžiulis and Assistant Professor and attorney Tadas Varapnickas. The discussion was moderated by Professor and attorney Solveiga Vilčinskaitė.
The book argues that international investment law cannot be fully understood in isolation from domestic property regimes. Different legal systems balance private property rights and broader public interests, including health, environmental protection, heritage, security and market regulation, in different ways. These differences challenge the assumption that a single neutral, universal standard of investment protection exists.
By bringing comparative property law into the debate, the book offers a fresh perspective on expropriation, compensation, state regulatory powers and the future development of international investment law.

Dr Inga Martinkutė teaches at Vilnius University Faculty of Law and has more than twenty years of experience in legal practice as counsel and arbitrator.
