VU Law Faculty MA graduates awarded at the Supreme Court of Lithuania

Yesterday, the Supreme Court of Lithuania hosted the award ceremony for the best Master’s thesis of 2023. The event, which has already become a tradition, is taking place for the eighth time this year. Each year Vytautas Magnus University, Mykolas Romeris University and Vilnius University submit up to 5 best final Master of Law theses, which are evaluated by a special jury composed of representatives of the universities and judges and staff of the Supreme Court of Lithuania.

This year’s first winner was Justė Kavaliauskaitė, a graduate of the VU Law Faculty, who wrote her Master’s thesis on “SLAPP actions in civil proceedings”. “I am glad to have had the opportunity to present the topic of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) to the academic community of lawyers and judges and to draw attention to the current issues of SLAPP in Lithuania today. I hope that the courts, when shaping the practice on SLAPP actions, despite the inadequacy of the SLAPP protection model chosen in Lithuania, will ensure effective protection of the rights of journalists, public figures, NGO‘s, lawyers, scientists and other entities, taking into account the academic debate and its results”, – shared her impressions with J. Kavaliauskaitė.

The third winner was Vincas Šniutė, as well a graduate of VU Law Faculty, who wrote a paper on “The Impact of Pandemics and Other Emergencies on the Performance of Contracts”. “I sincerely thank the Supreme Court of Lithuania for the excellent initiative to give law students the opportunity to present new ideas developed in their master theses. I have no doubt that this is an important bridge between academic legal science and the application of law in practice”, – said V. Šniutė.

A total of 12 theses were submitted to the Best Master of Law 2023 competition. All the participants were awarded certificates of appreciation and commemorative gifts. Other graduates of the VU Law Faculty, who participated in the contest: Gabrielė Ansurian, Dainius Kononovas and Ervin Zakrevski.
