Today, the Vilnius University Faculty of Law hosted a seminar-discussion on “The European Public Prosecutor’s Office in Lithuania: the experience of the first two years and topical issues” organised by the Department of Criminal Justice. The discussion was attended by the first European Public Prosecutor Tomas Krušna and the European Delegated Prosecutors Vytautas Kukaitis and Jolita Kančauskienė. The event was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Remigijus Markevičius.
The attendees discussed why the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is needed in Lithuania and raised the question of what makes the European Public Prosecutor’s Office unique, what kind of crimes it investigates. The participants discussed the results and achievements of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office in Lithuania.
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is an independent body of the European Union responsible for investigating, prosecuting and bringing to justice criminal offences affecting the financial interests of the EU, including fraud, corruption, money laundering and cross-border VAT fraud.
The countries that are currently members of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Romania.
At the end of the event, students and other audience members were able to ask questions live in the auditorium and remotely via the MS Teams platform.
